Casa D'Amici, at the top of High Street, has been closed by Morgantown city fire and code enforcement officers until electrical repairs can be made. The building was closed Sunday afternoon when an electrical short caused a small fire at about 1 p.m., Morgantown Fire Capt. Jay Bolyard said."They have some electrical problems that have to be worked out before they can reopen," he said. The restaurant was evacuated after employees reported black smoke in the room."No one was hurt," Bolyard said. Restaurant employees used an extinguisher on the fire and had it under control when the fire department arrived, he said."There was only a little wood burning when we got there," Bolyard said.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

he victim of a Friday evening shooting was treated and released from Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown this weekend, an official said.West Virginia State Police Trooper J.L. Brewer said that John Estep, 25, was treated and released from the West Virginia University hospital sometime during the weekend after he was shot during an altercation in the parking lot of the McDonald's in Ellenboro at 113 Washington St. on Friday evening."We are not sure when he was released, but we do know he was released during the weekend," Brewer said Monday. The two Parkersburg men arrested on Friday in connection with the shooting remain in custody at the North Central Regional Jail.Timothy Paul Cota, 18, was arraigned in Ritchie County on Saturday morning on charges of malicious assault and wanton endangerment and is being held on $50,000 bond.Shawn Dallas Linville-Harding, 20, was arraigned on Saturday morning in Ritchie County on charges of being an accessory to a shooting. Linville-Harding is being held on $25,000 bond.According to Brewer, Estep of Wood County was shot in the restaurant's parking lot following a verbal argument about stolen property."The verbal argument escalated to a physical altercation, which led to the weapon being discharged," Brewer said. "At this time, the motive for the incident is still under investigation."
Read more of this story at Barsmart

In 100 days, smoking will be banned in every bar, restaurant and workplace in Morgantown.City Council unanimously approved the ban Tuesday night but voted to delay its implementation. The Dominion Post reports that gives the city time to work with the Monongalia County Board of Health on a similar countywide law.Councilman Ron Bane says it would confuse people if the city passed a ban and the county did not.Under the ordinance, smoking is limited to private homes, only 25 percent of hotel and motel rooms, and bingo operations that distribute more than 100 cards.Business owner Lou Scotchel warns that some companies may move outside city limits to avoid the ban.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

MORGANTOWN -- Morgantown City Council passed a resolution Tuesday night that bans in smoking in bars, restaurants, and indoor facilities.Several restaurant and bar owners say a city-wide ban will push patrons outside of the city and hurt their businesses. Supporters say the all-out ban will protect everyone from second-hand smoke.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

A new Morgantown club is named in memory of a New Jersey woman killed during a robbery. Her brothers will ensure a percentage of the proceeds raised next week during club events will go to a foundation established in the name of the victim.Kyleigh Sousa, 21, was a sophomore at Arizona State University when she was killed May 26, her older brother, Bernie Sousa, said. Kyleigh had just finished work for the night and went to IHOP with a friend. Associated Press reports indicate that a man grabbed Kyleigh's purse in the parking lot. She became tangled in the purse straps and was dragged as the car the man entered drove off. A man has been arrested in connection with her death.Bernie Sousa said his sister suffered traumatic brain injury and died shortly thereafter.Sousa and his brother Mike, an WVU alumnus and a student, respectively, set up the Kyleigh Sousa Foun- dation. The foundation will help families of brain injury patients, award scholarships and help support families who have lost loved ones to random acts of violence, according to its website. The Sousas recently opened Ky's Lounge and the Ohana Bar, 491 High St., where Lola's and Fins used to be (behind Casa D'Amici on High Street). The bars are on different floors in the same building.Ky's Lounge, a 21-and-up bar that will cater to young professionals, is named in memory of Kyleigh. Next week -- beginning Tuesday, Kyleigh's birthday -- the brothers will donate a "large portion" of the lounge's proceeds for that week to the foundation. All of the proceeds of bracelets sold will go to the foundation. The bracelets say "Peace, Love, Ky."Sports memorabilia and packages from local businesses will be auctioned, and other events are being planned for Kyleigh's birthday week, Bernie Sousa said. The list is still being finalized but will be posted at http://www.kyslounge.com/.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Morgantown residents got a sample tasting of a southern West Virginian favorite Monday night.Tudor's Biscuit World, located in Star City on University Avenue, gave away free sausage biscuits and barbecue sandwiches ahead of its grand opening today."We're giving them a little bit of breakfast flavor and a little bit of lunch flavor," said Joe Horvath, co-owner of the restaurant.Horvath estimated as many as 200 people came in for the free food over the two hour period, with many more getting the food to go.Though he didn't have specifics on how many sandwiches and biscuits he had given away by press time, the restaurant had prepared as many as 800 for the opening. The restaurant offers a breakfast-heavy menu, featuring biscuits and omelets, as well as lunch items."The people that know it love it," Horvath said. "People have told me it's as West Virginian as white water rafting and pepperoni rolls."The menu also includes "The Mountaineer," a country ham, potato, egg and cheese biscuit. For Marshall fans, there's also the "Herd," a sausage, potato, egg and cheese biscuit.Armed with menus, Horvath greeted customers and asked them what they thought of the free food after they left."It's good," said one customer. "Thanks for bringing (Tudor's) to Morgantown."This is the first Tudor's location in Morgantown. The restaurant was initially expected to open after Thanksgiving Break, but delays associated with the renovation delayed the launch.Senior mechanical engineering major Tyler Jacobsen came out Monday for the free sandwiches, familiar with Tudor's from other locations."They have fresh breakfast food at a reasonable price," he said.Tudor's Biscuit World is located at 3071A University Ave. in Star City.Regular business hours are 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday and Sunday 7 a.m. through 2 p.m
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Club 228, located on High Street, recently had a grand reopening Tuesday night after the bar's upstairs was remodeled in December. The entrance of the club was redesigned, the floor was replaced, new paint on the walls, and the whole bar was refurbished, said Mohammad Kay, manager of Club 228.The remodel was made to attract new business and older clientele to change the bar's image as a "freshman bar," said Ric Hogerheide, Club 228 DJ and promoter."Downtown Morgantown has had the same clubs for 10 years," Hogerheide said. "So it has been the same scene for so long, students have become reliant, and we realized it's time to do something about it."Hogerheide said he hopes the remodel will encourage students to see what the club has to offer."Just because we are not 21-plus does not mean we do not cater to those kind of students," he said.Over a year ago when Club 228 opened, their goal was to change the design of the club every semester in order to keep students interested, Kay said. After seeing how downtown clubs in Morgantown had a downturn last semester, Kay said he realized it was time for an upgrade.Downtown clubs face competition from each other, so it's important for each business to have fresh interiors to attract business, he said.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Morgantown is now home to the only hookah bar in West Virginia.Domenick Melillo, co-owner of X-hale hookah bar, said the idea for the bar came about because he grew up in an area where it was always around."It was a nice thing to see people gather to smoke hookah, and it was a nice experience to have," he said. This same experience is offered to students through X-hale, Melillo said, which is located at 218 Walnut St. and replaces Club Octane. He hopes the bar will serve as a gathering place for friends to meet and talk rather than a club scene."There's hookah bars around the country," Melillo said. "You can come in for a cup of coffee, use Wi-Fi and smoke a bowl."Having the bar in Morgantown is great because the demographics of hookah smokers are younger people, he said."The American trend of hookah smokers are younger people," Melillo said. "But in other parts of the world, it's part of the culture."Melillo explains hookah is "all natural," since the tobacco is heated and filtered through water to create a vapor."An average can of hookah is only 17 percent tobacco," he said. "The rest is fruits, berries and various flavors."X-hale offers more than 50 flavors of hookah for people to choose from, Melillo said. It costs $12 to rent a hookah and an additional $2 to share.Hookahs can be shared four ways, and each hookah can last for about an hour, he said.Although smoking hookah doesn't result in a high, users should stay hydrated and eat before smoking, he said. They hope to expand into more entertainment, such as belly dancing and contests, but currently offer music and televisions, Melillo said.Jordan Sutton, a DJ at X-hale, said it is a great place to unwind and enjoy a variety of hookah flavors."DJing at the bar is extremely fun. It's a great environment, and students seem to love it," Sutton said. The hookah bar is good for a group to go out and relax, said Damaceno Guillermo, a junior communications studies major."It's great we finally have a lounge of some sort. It's a good change from the bars," he said.Sophomore pre-nursing major Christine Harvey said she like to sometimes visit the hookah bar when she goes out."We have a lot of hookah bars at home," she said. "It's nice to finally have one on campus again."A previous hookah bar, Sahara Cafe, located on Walnut Street, closed in 2007.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The West Virginia Wine and Jazz Festival begins this weekend at Camp Muffly and will feature a variety of jazz performances and local wines for tasting.Though this year will be the event's 17th year, Keith Jackson, member of the Wine and Jazz Festival Board and chair of the West Virginia University Division of Music, said this year will be slightly different from past efforts."What's different about this year is we focus on larger ensembles. On Saturday we have Paul Scea/Eric Haltmeier Project, which is a very different space genetics avant-garde band," Jackson said. "On Sunday ... our final group is very different. It's a tribute to Charles Mingus, who had controversial recordings in the '40s and '50s. We have an all-star cast from the region up to Pittsburgh."Other bands performing include the WVU Jazz Ensemble, The Rick Perdue Band, Azucar, Roger Humphries and RH Factor, The Mon River Big Band, WV Wesleyan College Big Band and Bill Heid Quartet.Read the rest.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Up All Night gives students an alternative to Morgantown's club sceneUp All Night is West Virginia University's answer to the Morgantown bar scene.Since 1998 the university has been offering mostly free food and entertainment at the Mountainlair, its student union, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. It's not cheap.Mike Ellington, assistant vice president for student affairs, estimates that the program costs the university $350,000 a year. Yet he is confident it will continue. With 3,000 students attending per weekend, participation is high, and "if it saves one person, it's worth it," he said. WVU was among the first couple of schools to come up with such an alternative to partying and binge drinking. Now institutions across the nation have similar programs, and companies specialize in providing the entertainment. Some of the police who are assigned to work the program each weekend believe students have a tendency to disrespect it.On the other hand, employees of the Mountainlair say the program has seen predominantly cooperative behavior and the students seem to have a high opinion of it."I think this is a great program. I met my best friend through the Up All Night program. It provided me with a unique opportunity to meet people, being that I came from Connecticut," said Brian Sinchak, a communications major."It was started to provide an alternative for students who don't want to drink," said Allen Flanagan, the Mountainlair's night operations supervisor. The program offers many alternative activities to students.Sonja Wilson, program administrator, said Thursdays are educational night and Fridays and Saturdays are interactive nights. She said Thursdays include movies, lectures, and Comedy Caravan, featuring professional comedians. Tutoring is offered all three nights. While some activities begin as early as 8 p.m., most offerings, including the free food, are available from about 10 p.m. to 2 a.m., Ellington said. Local bars typically issue "last calls" for drinks about 2 a.m. Campus police officers are assigned to Up All Night every weekend.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

All proceeds went towards the Upper Big Branch Family Fund.Local organizations and businesses helped out with a raffle including a signed basketball by the WVU Men's basketball team."I think it gets people to come here and a chance to get a social setting, listen to some good music and talk about what's going on. It's like therapy, getting a chance to express what's going on, maybe grieve a little bit," said CJ Elknap of Advantage West Virginia.Organizers expect this event alone will raise $5,000 towards the Upper Big Branch Family Fund.Upper Big Branch Family FundP.O.

Zenclay Cafe is hosting its Spring Artists Reception Saturday evening featuring work by local artists.Aside from serving gourmet dishes like Greek quesadillas and moo shu pockets, Zenclay Cafe also functions as a pottery studio and an art gallery.Shari McDermott, a Morgantown resident, is a self-taught photographer who believes "to capture a unique shot of anything is the best form of art."She will be showcasing a variety of her photos at the upcoming exhibit, which include shots of macro flowers, water droplets and vacation spots. As an arts enthusiast, McDermott appreciates the opportunity Zenclay Cafe gives to local artists but also enjoys the multipurpose restaurant for simpler reasons."I really enjoy the atmosphere, great food and friendly faces at Zenclay," McDermott said.Jeff Ryan will also be showcasing his work at the exhibit and plans to show a variety of tile mosaics at the event, which he likes to call "forced mosaics" due to the technique he uses to create them.He begins by cutting large slabs of clay and then colors them with slips and Engobe ceramic tiles before firing them. He completes the mosaics with black grout, which becomes a drawing medium for the pieces.Ryan, who is originally from Wheeling, W.Va., studied pottery at West Virginia University, has worked with ceramics in China, Armenia and Afghanistan but appreciates the local art scene as well."I feel very fortunate that my craft has taken me on adventures around the world," Ryan said. "However, Morgantown has a strong ceramics community based around WVU, and people should take advantage of the visiting artist series and galleries provided by the College of Creative Arts."Despite his admiration of Morgantown's art scene, he realizes that financially it is not the best location for a working artist, but has other motives for continuing to pursue his career locally."Morgantown is a small arts community and it will probably never be a place to sell artwork – not that people don't buy art here, it's just that as an artist it's a very tough place to make a living," Ryan said. "I enjoy making my mosaics, but to just make them is not enough. My exhibit is a way to let others enjoy what I create."According to Sue Ping, Owner of Zenclay Cafe, the restaurant has been exhibiting art for the past seven years of the 11 it's been open.Ping hopes this weekend will allow a new audience to experience what her business is all about: relaxing and appreciating the arts."I hope that we can continue to give people an opportunity to learn about art and explore it for themselves," Ping said. "But most of all, it's about providing a relaxing environment, good food and teaching others about art, while at the same time allowing local artists to share their work."Attendants will have the opportunity to meet with the showcased artists and get hands on by creating their own pottery.Artist Scott Harper will also be showing an assortment of wood sculptures and Mim Miller will be exhibiting functional ceramics. The exhibit reception begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Zenclay Cafe, located at 2862 University Ave.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

A fundraiser will be held Wednesday for the family of Ryan Diviney and to raise awareness about acts of violence.Ryan, a West Virginia University sophomore general studies major, was maliciously assaulted and left in a coma after a November incident. The event will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. at Dragonfly restaurant on Chestnut Street in Morgantown.Ryan was attacked outside the Willey Street Dairy Mart Nov. 7 at 3:10 a.m. by Jonathan May, 18, and Austin Vantrease, 18, of Newark, Del. The two teens were charged with malicious assault in connection with the beating. Two WVU students close to Ryan and a sociology professor organized a grass-roots fundraiser to help the Diviney family with rising daily costs of health care for Ryan.Jon Welsh, a sophomore political science major, and Hannah Ellis, a sophomore public relations major, want to see a successful fundraiser because they know how much it means to the Diviney family."I'm constantly going to see him. I just went the other day, and he looks better every time," Welsh said. "It makes me want to do more and more to help him."Welsh, who was Ryan's roommate, said the house is not the same without Ryan and his dog Duke around.During the fundraiser, a raffle and silent auction will be held, and all proceeds will go to the Ryan's Rally trust fund.Items to be raffled off include gift certificates, tanning packages, hotel accommodations at the SpringHill Suites Marriott, movie passes, a netbook and other WVU items. More will hopefully be added to the drawing such as a liquor basket, said Daniel Brewster, a sociology professor, who started the fundraiser.Dragonfly will donate 5 percent to 10 percent of its food and drink profits to the trust fund. Guests may bring cash or checks made payable to the trust fund for donation."(Welsh) and I were really good friends with Ryan, and he would definitely be doing the same for us," Ellis said. The people of Morgantown coming together shows how big-hearted its residents are, said Ken Diviney, Ryan's father."I thank the people of Morgantown for their continued support. We still get cards from people we don't know – just a Morgantown postage stamp," Ken said. "We just got a WVU-style prayer quilt from the Suncrest United Methodist Church. Ryan would love it."Recently, Ryan was accepted into the Kessler Institute for Rehabilitation in northern New Jersey and will be moving next week. Ken is excited because Ryan has begun to look like his old self again."I'm happy he's put weight back on and has his flexibility back," Ken said. "He can stretch his fingers out to normal now."Ken and his family work with Ryan daily to stretch out his joints and prevent them from locking. Recently, Brewster bought the family a continuous passive motion machine to help stretch Ryan's legs.It is amazing how much Brewster has done for the family even though he did not know Ryan personally, Ken said.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

A Star City restaurant is rebounding from a grease fire that shut it down for weeks. The Texas Roadhouse on state Route 7 has been closed March 8, and while the business is losing money during the down time, its managers are using the time to make some improvements, like a new "Mountaineer Room."The damage in the kitchen was so severe the restaurant may have to stay closed for another week."All new hoods," said manager Keith Freeman. "A whole new hood system. And we've done a lot around here too to get opened up, but mainly the hoods. Once we get the hoods opened up we'll be good to go."The restaurant aims to reopen early next week.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Mar. 9--Four companies of firefighters were called into action when a grease fire broke out at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant on Monongahela Boulevard at about 9:30 p.m. Monday.According to Jeff Quinn, fire chief of the Star City Volunteer Fire Department, his unit was the first on the scene."They had a flash fire off the hood of one of the grills," Quinn said."The fire blew out of the exhaust fan and through the roof."Seeing that it's a commercial property, when we got here, we just upgraded it to a four-company fire."Fire trucks from Westover, Cassville and Granville soon arrived on the scene.Quinn said the building had been evacuated by the time his unit responded, and that no one was hurt in the fire.Cassville Fire Department firefighter Chris Tennant said the fire was huge when his unit got there, but the four companies had everything under control and the fire was put out in less than 20 minutes.Restaurant employees stood in a circle in the parking lot of the compound waiting for the branch manager, but declined to speak to the media.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

MORGANTOWN -- The Monongalia County Sheriff's Department along with the West Virginia Alcohol Beverage Control Administration recently conducted a series of alcohol compliance checks. An operative visited 17 businesses in the area. Two out of the 17 were cited for selling alcohol to a person under 21.Those two businesses were Rhythm-n-Brews on Cheat Road and Fin's Beach Bar on High Street. It's all part of an effort to stop underage drinking and crack down on businesses selling alcohol to people under 21.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

Wonderful experience at Back Bay. Back Bay has a comfortable, nautical atmosphere along with a friendly waitstaff. Excellent variety of seafood and other delicacies, if seafood is not your preference of food, don't eat here! But great service, reasonably priced, and there is also a deck that is open weather permitting! Recommended for anyone who lovs seafood or other exotic food.
Read more of this story at Barsmart

This is a great family owned resturant. It has a typicial seafood shack atmosphere and friendly service. During the summer there is a deck to sit on and outside bar. Back Bay offers exotic foods like alligator tail, ostrich, and frog legs!! They also have all you can eat snow crab legs everyday for 24.95 and all you can eat baridi crab legs for around $42 (and the extra money is defintely worth it! the baridi crab legs are outstanding!!!) The prices are fair for the amount of food and quality you receive. The employees are also very knowledgable about the different seafoods the resturant offers. Presently they do not serve alcohol because of a problem with liscenes, but you are welcome to bring your own beer, wine, or liquor!! I would recommend this for anyone who has a hankering for seafood or want to try something new!!
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The initial vibe at Back Bay that I received was that of many high quality family seafood resturaunts give. This meaning a very authentic feel based on cleanliness, smaller quarters, knowledgable staff, decorations, and of course, great food. Food came out hot and ready for devouring. The crab dip, osterich, aligator tail, seafood nachos, and coconut shrimp were probably my favorites off their menu. If you get any of these you will be sure not to leave dissapointed. Also, the waitstaff was very quick and helpful. Got to speak with the chef, very pleasant person from what i could make out. Overall, I will most certainly be going back there sometime soon, and so should you!
Read more of this story at Barsmart

The Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling is experiencing a dramatic increase in the number of people it must feed daily, according to Executive Director Becky Shilling-Rodocker.In order to generate funds to feed the 200-plus men, women and children who frequent the Soup Kitchen each day, a variety of fundraisers have been set. The first two of a series to follow include:
* The Soup Kitchen Soup Sale is scheduled from 6 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday. For this event - in its sixth year - Beth Bednar, cook, will be serving "Beth's Famous Potato Soup" as well as homemade chicken noodle soup. The cost for one quart of soup is $5, and orders can be placed by calling 304-233-2992.
* The Soup Kitchen Spaghetti Dinner will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 26. Board members will be cooking and serving the pasta dinner, which includes a garlic roll, salad and desserts. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for children. Anyone who presents their church's bulletin at the time of purchase will receive $1 off of their meal."We are running short on funds and have decided to do a few fundraisers to get us through the end of the year," Rodocker said. "The first one is our Soup Sale, which is usually a big seller."Rodocker said there has been a 20-percent to 30-percent increase in the number of people being fed each month - a hike she termed as "huge" for her organization. She attributes the increased need to the faltering economy."I think that people have smaller jobs, work for smaller companies and do day labor, and those people are not getting those jobs anymore," Rodocker said. "I think people are frightened. All of the talk about the economy has scared people, and they want to try to save a little bit and make sure their bills are paid. We are getting new faces every day. We see a lot of the same, but with the new faces it's difficult."Also due to economic struggles, Rodocker said, fewer people are donating to the Soup Kitchen which is adding to the problem. She also said the kitchen is being extra careful with food to make sure it stretches a little further. On certain days especially at the end of the month the kitchen feeds more than 235 people."We are not getting the donations we used to get," she said. "We are just hoping the community opens its heart and gives at Christmas time. ... I think people should stop in and see the Soup Kitchen in action. It's very good for families."In conjunction with the fundraisers, there will be a raffle for a Pittsburgh Steelers Christmas Tree and tickets to the Pittsburgh Steelers versus the Cleveland Browns game on Dec. 28. There will also be a variety of other fundraising baskets available in the coming weeks."We also need volunteers as well," Rodocker said. "Hopefully, we can get help to survive. The cash flow is just not there. We pay for 60 percent of our food, and there are just a few employees ... We are also still paying off the building, which has been a blessing for many people around here. It has attracted many people in need. Children don't think they are in a soup kitchen. They think it's another restaurant."We do special things all year long," she added. "We are 25 years old, and we have to make sure we survive. It's just crunch time. That's why we have set up these fundraisers."Soup Kitchen Schedules Fundraisers to Meet Rising Needs -theintelligencer.netBy BETHANY A.
